WORKSHOP AND BACK-TO-BACK ONE-DAY SEMINAR ON
POLICY, PRACTICE, AND RESEARCH IN TECHNOLOGY TRANSFORMED LEARNING (APPRITTL 2011)

Background
The First international Meeting named the first Asian Workshop on Policy, Practice, and Research in Technology Transformed Learning (APPRITTL) 2010 was conducted at and hosted by National Central University (NCU), at Jhongda Rd. no. 300, Jhongli City, Taiwan 8-13 March 2010. The First APPRITTL Meeting had the goal to seek any academicians and institutions who are interested in Research, Practice, and Policy on the use of computer in education, to seek any country in Asia Pacific who are willing to host an International Conference on Computer in Education (ICCE), and to provide new sights to participants on How to learn (Innovative Pedagogy), Why to learn (Motivation and engagement), How well to learn (Learning performance), What to learn ( Domain knowledge), What to learn with (Computer programs or digital toys, virtual characters, or robot companions), Where to learn (Physical setting, on-line, or ODL) and Who to learn with (individuals, or teams).
In the Meeting, NCU has shown a good synergy among the government and non-government institutions and even with business sectors on the implementation of the use of ICT in education. The participants also had time to visit schools with different scale of the use of ICT in education.
The wrap-up of the Meeting said that
1. Each country seems to have Policy, Practice and Research (PPR) in the use of ICT for education.
2. The condition of each country varies on the quantity, quality and frequency of the use of ICT for education.
3. Research on the use of ICT for education has been scarcely done.
4. Indonesia, in this case UHAMKA and Pustekkom, is offered to conduct International Conference on Computer in Education (ICCE) 2012 0r the following year.
5. ICCE will expand its body to other ASEAN member countries.
Seeing the importance of the agenda, Indonesian team (Delegate from Pustekkom Ministry of National Education and UHAMKA University) regards them have compatibility with the effort of the Indonesian government on the use of ICT in education. This is in line with the point in the National Strategic Plan of Ministry of National Education of Indonesia (Renstra Diknas). The APPRITTL Meeting was attended by delegates from Nannyang Technological University Singapore, University Putera Malaysia, Malaysia, NecTec Thailand, Institute of Education Hongkong, Indonesia, and National Central University Taiwan as the host. The APPRITTL Meeting basically is one of the components of a wider conference, International Conference on Computer in Education (ICCE). ICCE is a larger forum than APPRITTL that it has 6 Special Interest Group (SIG), theme-based conference, they are on (C1) Artificial Intelligence in Education/Intelligent Tutoring System and Adaptive Learning (AIED/ITS-AL), (C2) Computer Supported Collaborative Learning and Learning Sciences (CSCL-LS), (C3) Advanced Learning Technologies, Open Contents, and Standards, (C4) Classroom, Ubiquitous, and Mobile Technology Mobile Learning (CUMTEL), (C5) Game and Toy Enhanced Learning and Society (GTEL&S), and (C6) Technology, Pedagogy, and Education. The 18th ICCE was successfully conducted at Putrajaya, Malaysia hosted by University Putera Malaysia (UPM) on 29 November – 3 December 2010. The resource persons from UHAMKA were in the C4 conference under the sub-theme on CUMTEL. The 19th ICCE will be hosted by NECTEC Thailand and will be conducted in Chiang Mai, Thailand on 28 November – 2 December 2011.
Thus, UHAMKA University, as an on-the-go private world university has a commitment to take part in the APPRITTL Meeting by proposing an intention to conduct the APPRITTL Meeting (Re: Letter of Interest) in Jakarta in September 2011. The APPRITTL team agreed with the proposal. UHAMKA would like to call for other universities in Jakarta and its vicinity to participate in the Meeting. The Meeting is meant also to find possibility for Indonesia to conduct ICCE conference. The organizer of the ICCE, the Asia Pasific Society for Computer in Education (APSCE), even offers Indonesia to conduct the 21st ICCE in 2013. While, Singapore will conduct the 20th ICCE in 2012.
Another interesting thing in the Meeting is that the role of private ICT companies is so significant in assisting the schools to use ICT in their teaching and learning activity. The companies also gave a demo to the delegates to introduce their products.
